Running in light surf

Running in light surf – the classic Explorer profile, this is possibly the best photo to give an impression of the boat

Broad reaching across breakers

Broad reaching across breakers

Broad reaching across breakers – Explorer’s stability gives you the confidence to really enjoy yourself! Note the cold-moulded cutting forefoot, which slices keenly into waves.

Explorer close hauled

Explorer close hauled. This view gives a clear impression of the neat and spacious cockpit, with its thwart for the centrally sheeted main. Note the folding stainless boarding ladder for swimming and MOB recovery.

Surfing at speed

Surfing at speed

Surfing at speed – weighing just 360kg (800lbs) Explorer soon gets moving. The deep draft bulb keel keeps her upright in the event of a broach.

Running home

‘Running home’

‘Running home’ – Lundy Island in the background. As can be seen here, the full-width mainsheet track provides excellent sheeting angle on this point of sail. On a 14 hour downwind run from Milford to Clovelly in 2004, this, combined with the equal-sized main and genoa, made for tireless goose winging.
