Surfing at speed – weighing just 360kg (800lbs) Explorer soon gets moving. The deep draft bulb keel keeps her upright in the event of a broach.

‘Running home’ – Lundy Island in the background. As can be seen here, the full-width mainsheet track provides excellent sheeting angle on this point of sail. On a 14 hour downwind run from Milford to Clovelly in 2004, this, combined with the equal-sized main and genoa, made for tireless goose winging.
